Barbie Talks Cryptocurrency: Margot Robbie Shares Insights in Recent Interview
In a recent interview, Margot Robbie, known for her role as Barbie, playfully addressed the topic of cryptocurrency, specifically Bitcoin. Robbie, along with director Greta Gerwig, humorously referred to Bitcoin as a “Ken” topic, poking fun at male producers like David Heyman and Robbie’s husband, Tom Ackerly, who frequently discuss the cryptocurrency.
The reference to Bitcoin as a “Ken” trait aligns with the portrayal of stereotypical male behaviors in the upcoming “Barbie” movie. However, while Bitcoin may not be of interest to Barbie, NFTs (non-fungible tokens) are a different story.
Mattel, the parent company of Barbie, has been actively exploring blockchain technology since 2021. They first delved into NFTs with the introduction of Hot Wheels on the WAX blockchain. Building on this, in January 2022, Mattel collaborated with Balmain for an auction of three exclusive NFTs. The success of these ventures led Mattel to form a multi-year partnership with NFT marketplace Cryptoys, providing exclusive access to their platform for Mattel’s intellectual property, including Barbie.
In October 2022, Barbie joined forces with Boss Beauties to create 15,000 NFTs based on 250 different professions portrayed by Barbie throughout the decades. This collection showcased a diverse range of careers, from chefs to astronauts, and more. Additionally, Mattel launched their own peer-to-peer marketplace in April, featuring NFT collections such as Hot Wheels NFT Garage, Hot Wheels Series 4, Boss Beauties x Barbie, and Boss Beauties x Barbie Redemption Tokens.
While Margot Robbie may dismiss Bitcoin as a “Ken” topic, Mattel’s active involvement in the NFT space demonstrates Barbie’s commitment to embracing blockchain technology. The company continues to innovate and expand its presence in the digital collectibles market.
