Worldcoin, the crypto initiative led by Sam Altman, has made a significant advancement with the unveiling of its WLD token and mainnet. The announcement was made on Twitter, creating a buzz of anticipation among crypto enthusiasts. The news was first reported by Semafor, bringing the exciting development to the public’s attention.
Users received a mysterious message on Sunday, urging them to update their mobile app and join Worldcoin’s World App on July 24, 2023, at 11 am. This message hinted at a thrilling development in the Worldcoin journey.
One of the key highlights of this advancement is the opening of the gate for developers. They now have access to Worldcoin’s software development kit (SDK), which allows them to create unique tools and apps using the project’s innovative identity protocol called World ID. To become fully verified, users need to have their irises scanned by the Orb device, which generates a unique identifier without storing any related data.
The token transformation process is also a significant aspect of Worldcoin’s development. Beta tokens will be converted, allowing users to utilize them within the World App or take them out elsewhere. Tiago Sada, head of product, engineering & design at Tools for Humanity, commented on the token’s design, stating that it is modelled after the Ethereum ERC-20 design. The listing of Worldcoin on exchanges will depend on the decisions made by other parties involved in the project.
Worldcoin is also migrating to the Optimism network, a Layer 2 scaling solution for Ethereum. This move is expected to enhance the availability and global reach of the Orb device, which has already scanned over 2 million people. Worldcoin aims to produce 1,500 Orbs by the end of the year, offering scheduled appointments in addition to pop-ups.
Behind the scenes, Sam Altman, co-founder of Open AI, leads Worldcoin, while Tools for Humanity secured a $115 million Series C funding round with support from industry-leading players such as Blockchain Capital, a16z, Bain Capital Crypto, and Distributed Global.
Worldcoin’s co-founder, Alex Blania, emphasized the importance of privacy-first, decentralized proof of personhood solutions in the age of AI. The project’s tokenomics will be revealed later on Monday.
With its potential to increase economic opportunities, establish human-AI distinction online, and even pave the way for AI-funded universal basic income, Worldcoin represents a remarkable experiment on a global scale. While the challenges ahead are significant and the outcome uncertain, the project brings an inspiring vision to the forefront of our technological age.
